Greece's Medicine and Understanding of the Human Body
Greek people believed that the gods and goddesses controlled sickness. Early Greeks thought that illness was a punishment by the gods. They didn’t even have the slightest clue that natural events usually caused illness. A Greek man, Hippocrates, changed the way people thought of sickness. This man believed that diseases had natural causes. Hippocrates is often called the “Father of Modern Medicine”, The early greeks didn’t really understand the human body because they couldn’t look inside the human body. Greeks believed that cutting people open would offend the gods. Many centuries later most medical students were able to name and describe the organ in the body.

Government
The government we use today was a greek idea that was called democracy. Democracy, or rule by the people, began in Athens. The idea of having citizens serve on juries also began in Greece. During those times the citizens talked for themselves. Today we have elected representatives to speak out for us.

Mathematics and Astronomy
The first great scientist, Pythagoras, was especially fascinated by geometry. The greeks created new and improved methods, to improve on the egyptians measuring system. They used geometry to figure out how much seed to buy for planting, or how to fertilize the fields, or even to lay out a city. Another famous greek mathematician was Euclid. His teachings for geometry were used for more than 2,000 year. The first women to earn a legacy for teaching math was, Hypatia. Born in Egypt, She taught greek philosophy and mathematics. The first person to suggest the the Earth rotates around the sun and the moon rotates around was Aristarchus. This idea really upset The greeks because most of them thought that the earth was the center of the universe.
